You are working hard and you are passionate about your mission, but it often feels like an uphill battle and walking through fire. The economic climate has made funding and outreach more difficult. There seems to be a new and competitive edge in Sustainable Business, Social Enterprise and the Third Sector, and the often modest compensation without job security is a cause for concern. There is fear in the back of your mind about disappointing your clients, partners, investors and funders, and not being able to meet their urgent needs and high expectations. Every morning you feel that there is not enough time to do it all, and you are not sure about your priorities. Some trusted friends tell you that you have become tired, cynical and sometimes resentful. You have even started to question your vision.
And you know in your heart that there is no turning back, that you just can’t give up now and walk away. Your expertise and network are established in your current work, and you are compelled to stick to your vision and purpose. But your schedule doesn’t leave much space for reflection or personal time to charge your batteries and find more joy in what you are doing.
You suspect that most of your peers and colleagues are struggling with similar problems. And you have considered moving back to a corporate job or taking a time-out. Cash flow is already tight, and you are looking for more ways to save money. The volunteers and supporters don’t really have the commitment that’s needed and can take up a lot of your time. The flow of information is huge, administration overwhelming and you keep looking everywhere for solutions. But in reality, you are not sure where to turn. Time management, more technological devices and keeping up with social media are not reducing the load, but actually increasing the pressure on you.
What you really want to do is to slow down, become unstuck, be more effective, and move forward with determination and authenticity. You need more clarity and certainty that you are taking the positive steps without choosing doubt and fear. You want to bridge the gap between your intentions and the daily struggle to implement them; you are eager to learn more about best business practices, financial planning and possible revenue streams while honouring the deep meaning of serving others and the greater good!
